# Bitcoin for Absolute Beginners

You've heard about Bitcoin. Maybe you think it's too late. Maybe you think it's too complicated. Maybe you think it's just for tech nerds or criminals.

None of that is true.

Here's how to go from zero to actually owning Bitcoin in about 30 minutes. No jargon. No hype. Just the basics.

What You Need to Know (2 Minutes)

Bitcoin is digital money that nobody controls.

  • Fixed supply: Only 21 million will ever exist. No government can print more.
  • Decentralized: No bank, no company, no single person runs it.
  • Self-custody: You can hold it yourself, no middleman required.
  • Global: Send it anywhere, anytime, to anyone.

That's it. Everything else is details.

Why Should You Care?

Your local currency loses value every year (inflation). Bitcoin doesn't. It's harder to make more Bitcoin than it is to print more dollars.

You don't need to "invest" thousands. You can start with $20. The point isn't to get rich — it's to learn by doing.

Your First 30 Minutes

Step 1: Buy $20 Worth (10 minutes)

Use Strike (iOS/Android):

1. Download the app

2. Connect your bank account

3. Buy $20 of Bitcoin

4. Done.

Alternative: Cash App (similar process, slightly higher fees).

Do NOT use Coinbase, Binance, or Robinhood for this. You'll understand why in Step 2.

Step 2: Move It to Your Own Wallet (15 minutes)

Right now, Strike is holding your Bitcoin *for you*. That's like leaving cash in a friend's wallet. You don't really own it until you take custody.

Download Phoenix Wallet (mobile, Lightning-enabled):

1. Install Phoenix from your app store

2. Write down the 12 recovery words on paper (not your phone)

3. In Strike, tap "Withdraw" → scan Phoenix's receive QR code

4. Send your $20 worth of Bitcoin to Phoenix

5. Wait 5-10 minutes for it to arrive

Now you hold the Bitcoin. No middleman. No account. Just you and your 12 words.

Step 3: Test It (5 minutes)

Send $1 worth back to Strike (or to a friend who also set up Phoenix). This proves you can actually use it.

Why this matters: Most people buy Bitcoin on an exchange and leave it there forever. They never learn how it actually works. You just did what 90% of "Bitcoin investors" have never done — you took custody and used the network.

What You Just Learned

  • Self-custody: You control your money with 12 words, not a bank.
  • Lightning Network: Phoenix uses Lightning for instant, cheap payments.
  • Bitcoin addresses: You can receive Bitcoin from anyone in the world.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Losing your recovery words = losing your Bitcoin forever. Write them down. Keep them safe. No screenshots.

2. Leaving Bitcoin on exchanges long-term = you don't actually own it. Exchanges can freeze accounts, get hacked, or go bankrupt.

3. Buying altcoins because they're "cheaper" = Bitcoin is divisible. You can own 0.0001 BTC. Price per coin is irrelevant.

Next Steps

Level 1: Learn the basics

Level 2: Use the network

  • Send Lightning payments with Phoenix
  • Try a Bitcoin ATM (buy/sell in person, no bank)
  • Run a node (advanced, but worth exploring eventually)

Level 3: Go deeper

  • Read the Self-Custody Guide
  • Learn about hardware wallets (Coldcard, Trezor)
  • Study mining, proof of work, and the halving

The Real Goal

Bitcoin isn't about getting rich quick. It's about opting out of a system that devalues your savings every year.

You just proved you can do that. Most people never take the first step.

What happens next is up to you.
